Fugeelah ~ a fully homegrown social enterprise takes off!
Recently Batik&Bubbles was invited to attend the launching of Fugeelah, a new lifestyle accessories brand which is designed and hand-made by students from the Fugee School right here in Kuala Lumpur!
I had first heard about Fugeelah when I attended a media event at Frankitas earlier in the year, where both Deborah Henry and Francisca Turner introduced us to this new sustainable brand and a preview of their earrings! I was quite excited to see how the business had evolved since then and what other new accessories were on offer!
For those of you unfamiliar with Fugee School - Fugee School was incorporated in 2008 as a place to educate refugee children and adolescents. Founded by former Beauty Queen and Childs Rights activist, Deborah Henry and Shikeen Halibullah, the school has successfully provided quality education to over 160 students from Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Palestine. The school is also recognised and supported by UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees.
It's been 10 years now since the school has been in operation, and it certainly is inspiring to see how the school has embarked on a new journey to educate the children with new skills!
The Fugee School has even partnered up with sustainable and socially aware partners and pioneers in the business, The Batik Boutique and Frankitas Design who have acted as mentors for the children, teaching them not only in craftsmanship but also in the business side and marketing of running a venture!
The Rotary Club of Subang and UNCHR have also taken a role in supporting this initiative and 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the accessories will go straight back to the school, providing an additional source of income!
One can really see how much thought, love and care has been put into making the products. It truly is heartwarming to see the children's works of art turn into fashion accessories that really make a statement!
During the launch, there was a true sense of pride and happiness in the air as the students participated in the fashion show, walking around the venue and showing off the colourful and punchy accessories !
I can't quite imagine how difficult their lives have been so far and it is quite incredible that they have been given this opportunity to learn new skills and take part in a project that will enrich their lives!
A huge congrats to Deborah and the children of Fugee School for a fantastic new enterprise and I totally look forward to see what other new products and accessories we can look forward to in the future!
